Ten Games We Couldn't Win (But Did)

- Kensington 4-94 chasing Reds 105
(C matting grand final 84-85)
... and Kensington's president was discussing what a boost this flag would be
for the club. Then the bowlers changed ends with the weather, Ross Attrill took
5-2 and Kensington slumped to 9-97.The last batsman edged a four and it rained
the next two weekends. The game finally resumed with the umpires under direction
to relocate if necessary to Ascot Vale or Royal Park to get it over with. Another
run was added, then Norbert Loeffler bowled the no. 11, who understandably left
in tears.
- Reds 9-54 chasing Swan 100
(A turf 87-88)
Then Geoff Boyes and Graeme Merry added 46. OK, we didn't win, we tied. But
it felt like a win. See Twenty Reds Classics.

(B turf 87-88)
Then Rick Mitchell (40) and Norbert Loeffler (29*) put on 66 to set up an unlikely
victory
- S.Yarra Park 3-39 chasing Reds 58
(B turf 89-90)
... before Steve Windsor took 6-9 off 5.1 overs to bowl them out for 52. Put
it down to ... ticker!!!!
- Needing an outright...
Reds 223 vs Prahran Imperials 4-95 at tea
(A turf 90-91 ).
Sixteen points out of the four with two to play, Reds had to win outright to
set up a last round showdown for fourth, but at tea on day two we had no hope.
Then Prahran collapsed to all out 139 at 4.40pm, Declining to enforce the followon,
we forfeited our second innings to set the irresistible target of 85 in 70 minutes.
Prahran were coasting at 1-28 after 4 overs. Then Mike Langley (5-34) and the
spirit of Inzimam AI-Huq (four run-outs) produced an incredible collapse for
Reds to win by 14 runs with ten minutes to spare... and make the four the following
game.
- Reds 4-4 then 5-33
chasing Old Melbourne Wanderers 136
(C turf 92-93)
... then Dave Rogerson (69) and Peter Guley (54) added 113. Shut the gate.
- Reds 5-9 chasing Coles Myer 96
(A turf 93-94)
... and the Chief steered us to 9-110 while Simon Roberts chatted up Bill Leane's
wife. See Twenty Reds Classics.
- Reds 7-55 chasing Old Haileybury 215
(B turf 94-95)
... against the top side in the final round. Tim Powell (145*) and Dot Scealy
(29) put on a club record 146, Reds won by two wickets, and we slipped into
the four ... only to be knocked out again when South Yarra won outright on the
Sunday.
- Reds 8-129 chasing Burnley 199
(C turf 98-99)
... then Shazz Byrne (58*) and Simon Roberts (33*) took us to 8-205.
