Ten Games We Couldn't Lose (But Did)

  1. Reds 1-304 vs Brandon
    (A matting 83-84)
That was at 5.30pm. We finished 7-354 .... and got crushed! Brandon won by 4 wickets with more than 10 overs to spare. Full horrific story in Twenty Reds Classics

  2. Reds 199 & 3-110 vs Brandon 181
    (C matting grand final 83-84)
With just a day to play and the premiership in the bag, the boys decided to celebrate a night early ...had a little too much weed ... and lost 7-37 on resumption to some furious fast bowling. Brandon reached 7-166 to steal the flag with fifteen minutes to spare.

  3. Reds 138 vs Yarra Park 64
(B turf 85-86) Woops! We all make mistakes... and sometimes your captain makes them for you. Like declaring at 2-42 and setting the opposition just 117 in 25 overs. The embarrassing tale of a declaration that went just a teensy bit wrong is in Twenty Reds Classics.

  4. Reds 8-234 vs Yarra Park 121
    (A turf grand final 90-91)
The greatest nightmare of them all. Yarra Park dismissed us for 242, hit up 197, then helped by some very ordinary umpiring, dismissed us for 76 to force a tie and take the flag due to higher ladder position.

  5. Reds 4-72 chasing API 8-cc-96
    (A turf 92-93)
Then needing just three an over, with API skipper Misurelli bowling help-yourselves, we lost 6-13 in 7.3 overs.

  6. Reds 5-196 vs Fitzroy-Doncaster 217
    (A turf 93-94)
Fawkner Park No.5 playing beautifully, outfield fast, two batsmen well set ... what could go wrong? Well, you could always lose 5-6, couldn't you?

  7. Reds 189 vs Powerhouse 8-60
    (C turf 93-94)
Then nos 9 and 10, Hickman and Morgan, made 114* and 102 apiece to take Powerhouse to 270. Morgan hadn't played the first week, and he just called in between a round of golf in the morning and another round later in the day to help out with a 200 partnership.

  8. Reds 5-165 vs Coles Myer 173
    (A turf 93-94)
We needed nine off the last six overs, so maybe it was the pressure of having to score so fast that caused us to lose 5-5 and go down with three balls to spare. Enough to make some people spit.

  9. Old Haileybury 5-12 vs Reds 117
    (A turf 95-96)
....And with a team of fill-ins (and one shifty ring-in) they passed us with nine down. See Twenty Reds Classics.

  10. Reds 6-100 chasing Yarra Park 113
    (A turf 98-99)
Then we lost 4-11 against a struggling side and a one-man attack to blow our place in the finals.
