Lost in Fawkner Park: My Childhood Interview with Jimmy and Freya

Children featured strongly in the Reds CC during the 1990s. Their presence - or lack of it - contributed to a number of batting collapses and a few outstanding performances. Regardless, as an inclusive club their experiences are represented here (well, those Alec could track down).

Alec: Was it good fun going to all those Reds when you were little?
Freya: Yes, we used to steal chewy from Dad's bag.
A: What about the cricket, did you like watching the Reds?
F: I didn't watch the cricket. I used to play cubbyhouse in the trees.
A: Was anything else good apart from the chewy?
F We used to go to the playground. One day we slid down the dirt and got really dirty..
A: Did you get into trouble?
F: We didn't but the other kids did.
A Did you get anything nice from the kiosk?
F: Rebecca's dad and Caitlin's dad used to get us ice-creams.
A:What about your dad?
F: Dad got us McDonald's.
Jimmy:And Coca-beer at the clubrooms.
A:What's Coca-beer?
J: Its like Coca-cola but its in green cans.
A:That wasn't very ideologically sound, was it? F: Huhnh????
A: Not very healthy?
F; It was yummy.
A: What about you Jimmy, did you like going Fawkner Park?
J: No, there wasn't anything to do.
A: Did you ever watch the cricket?
J:Yes.
A:Who was your favourite Reds cricketer?
J: My dad.
A: Really?
J: I have to say that or he'll get angry and send me to my room.
A: Did anything bad ever happen at cricket?
J : One day Giles poked me in the eye with a stick and Dad took me to the hospital.
A:What happened there?
J: Max came and told Dad he had to go and bat because everyone was going out.
A: So what happened?
J: Oh, Max stayed with me and the doctor gave me yummy medicine.
A: So what did dad tell mum when you got home?
J: He said they lost.
A: Did you ever get into trouble at cricket? J: .... no.
A: Wasn't there something about crossing a railway line out at Royal Park with other boys? about that, I don't want to
J: Don't talk remember it.
F: Mum came home.
Q;What did she say to your dad?
F: Dad was batting. She just yelled at Peter Pickle [sic.].
A: You both played for the Reds under-12s against Gunbower. Would you like to be captain like your Dad?
J:Yes,'cos then I could tell people where to go, and I could call round or smooth.
F: No, 'cos people say mean things about you when you're batting.
